I've been going through links recommended by BeerLeggers. Lots of really good material that explains the concepts of [msg=239067]Ellipsoids, Datums, and Geoids[/msg].
Dave Doyle's Webinar Introduction to Geodetic and Tidal Vertical Datums is a must-watch for anyone that would like to learn about the geodesy that our surveying measurements are based on.

There was a few webinars about said topic and I attended them all. I wasn't going to bother since I'm not really near a coast but my Buddy Jules in Mississippi pretty much insisted I attend. And so I did. He was right. I ended up with a bunch of continuing education credit which I don't need but got the certifications anyhow. I found the subject matter incredibly interesting and would be happy to have been one of Mr. Doyle's underlings. But since he retired I don't reckon that is going to happen.
If you can find them all there was the east coast datum, west coast, great lakes and Columbia river in Washington. They did webinars on them all and no one would be disappointed. I sure didn't!!

E,
I've watched a couple of Dave Doyle's Webinars and one Power Point lesson. I'm going to look up everything of his I can find.

Webinars Are Top Notch, But Dave Is Better In Person

His article in Professional Surveyor magazine entitle "A New Datum" is also good for reading about some future changes in the works. Its in the August 2013 edition.
