Modern day office equipment can be touchy. Had odd things happening to some programs, Autocad would lose pallets on start up, something odd was happening to TBC. None of these things were happening to my computer so of course I didn't get to upset. A couple of days of this happening on and off and we had to call the guy in.

He drops by, types on the keyboard, humms and haas and boom; he figures it out. Seems there was a failing power cord to one of the servers. It was cutting in and out, there are battery back-ups kicking in, but this cord was the issue.

I can say I never would have figured that out.?ÿ

Sometimes you just have to call the guy.

The last time I called "the guy", was probably 10 years ago and literally the last time I called him, because he said what he'd always said for the previous 10 years: "your computer must have a virus and you'll have to reformat it and reinstall everything".

Are you sure he didn't start with "have you tried unplugging it for 30 seconds?"

I'm lucky now, I have a good one down the hall working for another business. But the caveat is use the service sparingly. Good ones don't come cheap.

Yes to be fair, in those olden days at the beginning of IT, the IT guys that we had were junior CAD technicians diverted into a new role, and at that time everyone was learning and an there were many experts. That meant that when other staff had to call IT, following company rules about who could and couldn't fiddle with things, the poor IT guys would get a thorough mauling (not by me, I felt sorry for them).
