My wife and I had the distinct pleasure of enjoying some time at Spirit Mountain Casino in Grand Ronde, Oregon with none other than the illustrious @northernsurveyor ???? ???? ???? ?????ÿ
I've been wanting to meet him in person for many years and have been looking forward to an Alaskan trip to see him -- but we haven't yet made it up there. He was down here for a brief trip, and we were lucky enough to get his attention for a couple hours over dinner.
We chatted about miscellaneous things, but one thing is very clear: Northern Surveyor is a well-educated, worldly traveler (who happens to also be a wonderful asset to the surveying profession) who's married to an angel of a wife (me too, actually). We truly appreciated the visit and meeting him for the first time.
There are a few members here that I consider celebrities -- many we've met and many we've not met -- I hope to meet more of you soon!
Awesome to meet Wendell and Angel. I need to get back to my bush life and exercise. For old timers, zoom in on my T-shirt logo.
@northernsurveyor Never seen a fish like that. It looks like a mix of a gaftop, sheeps head, and a jack crevelle, to make that.
Damn. We could pass for brothers. Sorry you have had to go around looking like me all these years. Better luck with your next incarnation.
@rj-schneider its a Pez Gallo or called a roosterfish. Widely range in the Pacific from Baja Mexico to Columbia. I was fishing in Panama but have caught many in Mexico and Costa Rica.
Happy y'all had a good time. And that's a bigtime Rooster! Now, and more important, where did you buy that red shirt. I want one!
@flga-2-2 Logo on the T-shirt a very long story about one of the first survey forum boards. Long ago shut down, there are some sensitivities about it. If you didn't get a shirt before the turn of the century, your out of luck.
The roosterfish was caught on a fly rod, as that's how I primarily fish.
The first time I met Mike; he was standing in line in front of me, at 5:30 in the morning, waiting to get coffee at the ACSM conference at the Riviera in Las Vegas. He turns around and says; You here for the Surveyors Conference? I looked around and said; are you talking to me? do I look like a surveyor? I was flattered; we laughed and became instant friends. That conference came with lots of good stories, and great memories!
- POB sponsored a host bar and we all almost got 86'd.
- We enjoyed several meals with more "celebrities" than I can list here
- RADU was there and we enjoyed heckling him at his presentation on Outback Surveying
- Some memories are best left in Vegas...
Mike is a great guy and gracious host. He'd give you the shirt off his back; his awesome wife would give you a car if you needed it!
We talked about putting together a non-sanctioned fish and learn conference in Whitter AK. They've got an awesome facility, it would be something like Larry P's surveyors cruise.
What does the peanut gallery think about such an adventure?

I was probably there too. Actually have been on most "boards" since their inception. Nothing compares to this board though. The shirt I was referring to is the red one with the fishes all over it, and in your case it probably has beer all over it.
@flga-2-2 My red reef fish shirt I got in Fiji. The T-shirt was from a forum board that started with Bob and next word was a gravity parallel used with a brass plumb seeking device.
Never been to Alaska but I'm looking for ANY excuse!
