Do you guys have any trouble with the touch screen on the S2? I am demoing one, and have a lot of trouble getting it to "stick", especially near the edge or corner.
I've used the Juniper Systems boxes in the past without any trouble, but from what I've read on the Carlson Knowledge Base, this is a different animal, and I can't tame it.?ÿ
Am I being too pickey, or do you guys have trouble with it too? I am hesitant to pay a premium price for this for what I'm getting.
TIA, JTS
I tried one and had trouble, as described. Real finicky on and near the edges. Traded it for a mini2 within the first month, or so. Igage had excellent CS and, once they got it back and checked it over, gave me a full refund on the price difference. ?ÿ
Granted, it had only seen minimal use because of the noted issues ( kept using my old dc). ?ÿ
ive been very happy with the mini2. ?ÿseems to come down to a physical keyboard or not. The guys that are normally in the cold and have on gloves need the physical. I??m generally in the warm enough and don??t miss it/ do fine with the software keyboard.
that does make me want to voice a small gripe: why isn??t the software keyboard QWERTY?

At least the Surveyor2 has a QWERTY keyboard, but I don't think the touch screen is going to be acceptable. Juniper DC's are very durable, but they ain't cheap, neither. It's an expensive box to have to put up with that. I can buy a CHC for less than half of the Surveyor2, but it don't have a keyboard, and I don't think I'm willing to do without that, so I don't know which way to go. I like the old Ranger boxes, but I gotta buy the software with it that I don't really need and transfer SurvCE to it. Don't know which way to go yet. If I knew they would be fixing the Surveyor2 with a software upgrade, I would tough it out, but no way to tell.
Thanks for the Input!
I have been using my Surveyor2 for the past year.?ÿ I have had no real issues with the touch screen, but I tend to use the actual keys and the stylus, since I found they work better than just using my fingers.?ÿ However, fingers do work sometimes.

I have a Surveyor+ rather than a Surveyor2, but they may use the same touchscreen.?ÿ I've also found that using the screen very near the edges can be troublesome, but that most of the SurvCE boxes extend far enough into the screen that I can operate them well enough with a finger, and easily with a stylus.?ÿ In the native Windows OS screens, there's sometimes a scroll bar on the right that I've only successfully used with a toothpick.
All that said, almost all of the operations I regularly need can be accomplished via keystrokes instead of the touchscreen.?ÿ There are a couple for which I haven't found a key combination, but none of those involve a troublesome edge location.?ÿ I rarely have to break out a stylus, which I hate to do because it slows me down.
I have a Surv2 and don't find the touchscreen troublesome.?ÿ Like Jim, the scroll bars on the side of a list are useless as they are too small, but that is a software issue not a hardware one.
Hi,
Probably you have what they call a zombie finger.
Just use some water-based moisturizer...
It's basically a limitation of the capacitive touch technology which works very different from the resistive touch.
Both have their pro's and cons but it's a known fact that people which thich callus have issues with capacitive touch screens because the dead skin basically blocks the energy that's needed.
Greetings,
Floris.
This is why touchscreens have no place on a field device (rant over).
I don't want to hijack thread but it's a timely topic for us right now.
We have always used Allegros and have been very satisfied.?ÿ Right now my guys are trying out a Carlson RT3 and a Surveyor2. I guess we'll add a Mini2 into the mix. How does the Mini differ from the Surveyor2 and do any of you have any thoughts on all three.
Thanks in anticipation.

A general comment on the Surveyor2:?ÿ it's the successor to the Surveyor+, which I've been using for a couple of years now after my Allegro CX screen died.?ÿ Aside from a few small differences, I find the Surveyor2 to be every bit as capable and robust as the Allegro.

Thanks Jim. How about the "Edge" remarks above??ÿ
btw, the Surveyor2 is the same box as the Allegro2. I'm not sure when they changed the touchscreen type, sometime after the Allegro MX. The newer type screen has a lot better clarity than the old, but I prefer the old type for selection.

As I noted earlier, the Surveyor+ can be difficult around the edges, particularly the very narrow vertical scroll bar.?ÿ Most of the other boxes can be operated with a finger (though I have small hands), but sometimes it takes a concentrated effort.?ÿ But I dislike touchscreens in general, so I use the keyboard for every operation except those few for which the programmers forgot to provide an alternative.
The Surveyor 2 and Carlson Mini 2 have the same specs as far as processor speed, processing RAM, and data storage.?ÿ The Surveyor2 has the physical keyboard.?ÿ ?ÿThe Mini 2 is set up for portrait orientation and the Surveyor 2 is landscape, which I tend to prefer in Carlson SurvCE.
I use the Mini 2 for weight.?ÿ I know it's not much, but the Surveyor2 is a bit bulkier than the mini.?ÿ That said the mini seems to do pretty good.?ÿ Aside from not having a physical keyboard, everything else works pretty slick.
