I've worked with a three-man level crew. It isn't that difficult. You call him off, he walks toward you while you turn the level and read the front-rod. You are possibly picked up before he even reaches you. It's really quite simple. You can read a distance and make sure he is in an acceptable range even if he steps off where you stop at and have to move a bit. I've often used a handlevel to get me close to a good place to turn. Yes, you sometimes have to adjust a little especially if you are trying to keep balanced legs.
Regardless, I think it's much faster and not nearly as complicated as you are making it sound. I am guessing you have decided it is a big problem, and I'm sure I won't convince you. I'll just ignore your mocking of me.
