Just got back from the conference in Msla. Lots of food for thought. Great time visisting friends. Western chapter did a great job.
I wasn't sure if was REALLY the MARLS Conference, since I didn't have to drive thru a blizzard in eith direction to get there.
Pre-conference Seminar was Peter Dayton- Msla attorney gave an 8 hr block on public road law. Alot of history and a pretty exhaustive complilation on statue and case law.
1st day was Don wilson. He presented some food for thought, but too many war stories and rabbit trails.
2nd day was some stuff from DNRC on elevation certifcates, a trimble R10 commercial. (in the back of my head i have visions of some trimble functionality ceasing and them offering free 30 days trails of their proprietary vrs system... sKynet is becoming self aware.
had another attorney talk on recent case law.... which leaves little hope for the future of mankind.....
then there was the presentation on the Mullan Road. I'll post more on that later.
The presentation on the Mullan road consisted of a presentation on the location and construction of the Mullan road.
the 1st 90 minute were from a semi-retired LS who is arguably the foremost subject matter expert on the Mullan road. - he discussed the route , the tools, the maps, etc. then he proclaimed that there are few locations where the actual route could be located within 100 feet some place within half a mile.
thwen the deputy legal council for Missoula DWP came up to talk about a recent descision/memo that the Msla County public works had issued.
Is seems that in resuearching the record, the mullan road falls in a place in historuy wherein it's creation was at a time all public roads in Montana territory would be 66 feet wide. therefore Missoula county is henceforth requiring all surveyors to show it as such on their surveys.
... in direct conflict with the last 40 odd years, at least, of Missoula county requiring surveyors to show it as 60 feet wide.
there are at least 17 miles for county road that Missoula county considers being public road based on it supposedly being a part of the mullan road.
o.O

Would that be my buddy Bill?
Mr. Wiekel has a lot of cool stuff...
Bill gave two excellent presentations at the Surveyors Historical Society Rendezvous last year, one on the surveying tools and techniques of Lewis and Clark and one on his extensive research on the location of the "Council Bluff" where L&C first met with the Western Indians.
The Mullan Road talk was good, but my favorite was the talk on finding the 2 mineral surveys 2 miles from their reported location after many years of searching and many miles of serious hiking and backpacking in hardcore Grizzly country ferreting out the clues. Nice job by Dave Dorsett and Linda Smith.
It's also nice to be done working on the conference for another 8 years! You are up next Mark, good luck on next year. Outlaw Inn the only game in town for hosting?
Yes we are up- Currently planned for the Red Lion, But I would like to see it moved to the Hilton Garden Inn. As for the Outlaw- I don't think I'd go in there with a .45 and a can of raid. na-a-styyyyy!
Sounds Like your wife did a great job on the ladie's program. I know Heidi enjoyed it.
