We had 12 Atlas missile (SM-65F) sites in southeast Nebraska that were built in 1961. Generally the silos were near the center of a section. Around the perimeter of the section there were concrete pedestals placed for survey monuments. I was told that these were used to align the missiles once they were brought up. USC&GS also ran First-Order level runs to them and at some established triangulation stations. One is named "BLAST". When I was surveying near a site about 25 years ago, a farmer told me that they had them up and ready to fire during the Cuban Missile Crisis. They all had the rural roads paved to them which was sort of a give away to their locations. Lincoln and Omaha also had two Nike surface to air missile complexes for defense of incoming Russian missiles. All sites have long since been abandoned and are now in private ownership.
