Last week was a rare week. I spent it in the field near 25°30'N 80°35'W guarding a static GPS receiver while watching gators swim in the canals, and looking out over a vast sea of grass as far as the eye could see. I will likely be doing more of the same this coming week. I've enjoyed being in the field, despite the heat, because I know my work will add to a public benefit for future generations.

As Newtonsapple pointed out, Maine mailed their exam result letters on June 1, 2011. I am still amazed that it only takes 3 days for a piece of first class mail to get from Augusta, Maine to South Florida, despite the ongoing consumer complaints about that quasi-governmental business.

Today's mail brought my passing letter from the State of Maine. By returning a copy of their letter, along with another $275, they will send me a little something to hang on the wall next to my Florida license. Thus, another chapter in my career may begin to unfold, when I choose to persue it.

If any Maine licensed surveyors can offer thoughts on job outlooks in "the County", let me know.

Congratulations.

I can imagine times are tough in "The County". My mom was born and bred in Houlton. I can remember that my grandfather always had two or three jobs going, trying to make ends meet. Seems that many people up that way had to have bi-vocations, only way to make enough to survive. Don't know how things are today, haven't been back since the '80's.

Ah, the old "get the license ahead of time before I bail on the rat race and move to the woods" trick.

I've been thinking about the same thing, getting my Washington and Oregon license ahead of time, so I'm ready to move back when I finally snap and have had enough of the DC suburbs.

Congratulations!!

The last time I was up in the County was to work on an unpopular wind farm project. Haven't heard much about it in a while.

Would that be the farm up toward Presque Isle, or a different one? Speaking of those turbines, I need to go visit UMPI to see if I can get close to the one they have and get a feel for what sort of racket they really make, since I doubt the major wind farms let you get very close to any other honest working turbines...

My local community college in Florida has a Wind Power class, but the turbines they received as donations were only little tiny units with a 60" blade diameter. (Basically an Air-X unit). I've heard plenty of them on sailboats, and they certainly make some noise.
