I first experienced the potentially lethal interaction of these things whilst ripping along the Nevada desert on an atv doing gravity surveys. My peripheral vision picked up this nearly?ÿ 3' dark vertical line that I just missed to my right do I circled back and dismounted.

Sure enough. GLO MARKER for the section atop an iron rod that had survived the elements and erosion since 1912 as stated on the cap, slightly hidden in the tumble weeds.

Was basically perpendicular to the ground and seems like it would be a horrible object to impact on an atv at 40+ mph 15 or 20 miles from the nearest road.

PSA to the crew went out that night...don't hit the monuments. You might not survive.

I'd guess the fence corner installers dinged that one.
