Office server is becoming old (2007)and It's time to replace / upgrade.

I have had several people suggest going to NAS

Any thoughts, comments or suggestions?

That is the basic concept of what I am putting together on my new build. I am starting out with a WD 3tb MyBook that will connect 4 desktops and one laptop for network storage.

TP-Link will even connect to my windows98 dinosaur.

The wireless is becoming simple and reliable with pci and pci express cards and usb port applications.

These new 3.0 usb devices and multi terabyte exterior drives are fast and will send and hold more info than I will probably ever produce in x,y,z,d formats and drawings and text.

The big plus is that you can copy and load all your work into one small device and carry with a laptop to access and add to anywhere you want.

B-)

yea, what he said above. I picked up one of those 3tb MyBook units at Office Depot on sale for $120. You can hardly start to build a server for that.

look into a company called "Synology" for good NAS boxes.
They get great reviews and offer a wide variety of sizes and configurations.
I would go with an empty 2 or 4 bay box and buy the hard drives seperatly to load into it. That way you can upgrade the drives at any time, and buy only the amount of storage you need now, with room to grow later.

It seems that more and more 'networks' are getting away from the traditional type "sever box" and going to a network storage/sharing.

Any pros or cons, considering a small office that has 6 computers, 3 printers, 1 plotter and 1 scanner

I have been thinking of a NAS box for a couple years, watching this thread for ideas. I don't currently run a server (or NAS) on our small office network, BUT was thinking of doing that for the storage / backup ability AND ability to remotely log in and grab project data.

I have a ReadyNAS Pro 2. It's 2TB (2 drives each 1TB). You can get them with up to 6 drive bays and larger than 1TB disks. I have the disks mirrored so I really have only 1TB (saved twice) which is way more than I need at this time. I just use it simply as an extra (main) drive for my files. It's just plugged into the network and I named it Drive Z: I copied everything I have saved from the last 15 years from several different computers. It's all there now on Drive Z: (can't always locate everything fast though but that's not because it ain't on there)
