You were a PLS at a PE firm. Remember how the PES treated the PLSs. How do they treat the CAD techs? I only worked for one and I scared the PES since I know some engineering concepts and can figure out the rest. The drafters were treated like what bears do in the woods. So now you come into the situation of providing a CAD file that meets no standard.

What are they seeking?
Objects on correct layers. I have a LARGE PE firm who wants about 400 layers in every exsiting plan... all items BYLAYER color and linetype.
POLYLINE for all line work. I do sneak in some MPOLYGONS.
MTEXT for all text.
C3D objects for all.
National CAD standards for layers.
Anything else? There are tools to help with all of these items right in Carlson.

Also if I need any geometry from the xref I used to trace over it using osnaps but have since discovered the ncopy command which allows you to copy entities from xrefs directly into your drawing, it's a handy way to find out what layer stuff is on also, ncopy into your dwg view it's layer name and undo so it strips that layer back out of your drawing.
