The 1 meter DEM data from the USGS comes in .img format. I am semi familiar with with ArcGIS but don't have a license. Is there a way to get this data into either Civil 3D or Carlson easily?

Thanks

QGIS plus GRASS-GIS have a plugin that converts DEM to contours. Been a while since I used it. Was a two hour learning curve maybe, including the downloads and installation. Free though.

GDAL Translate (Free) will convert those USGS IMGs to numerous other formats! Here is a write up with links to download and command line arguments for converting the grids. I'm sure it will help get you going in less time.

Yes, GDAL. I think that's the same plugin QGIS/GRASS uses for the task.

What the others said and when you convert from .img convert to geotiff DEM. C3D can build a surface from that.

QGIS with the various plugins is the bomb and it is free. Global Mapper for 450 bux is a screaming deal as well.
