Hello, I presented this question awhile ago with zero responses.
In the past I was using XP and Microsoft Active Sync to connect to my data collector (Trimble ACU from 5600 series total station).
Now that I'm using Windows 7 it appears that Active Sync is not compatible with Windows 7.
Windows Mobile Device Center apparently is only compatible with Vista.
I have installed Trimble data Transfer 1.56, but get a message every time it loads that Windows Mobile Device Center is not loaded.
I am told that sync functions are now built into Windows 7 pro via the Sync Center.
However, when I plug my data collector into my USB port, nothing happens. It does not show up as a mobile device in Windows Explorer.
How are you surveyors running Windows 7 connecting the Trimble data collectors?
Thank you for any guidance you can provide.
I'm starting to think I need to install Windows Mobile Device Center for Vista 64 Bit even though it is listed as only compatible with Vista?
Yes, you can put Windows Mobile Device Center on Windows 7, and it works every bit as well as the old Active Sync. Ignore what Microsquish says about it only working on Vista.

Thank you...I was practicing the secret handshake to get into the good ol boys club just as you were typing.
I will give it a go and see what happens.
SO I installed Windows Mobile Device Center without any glitches. I plugged the ACU into a USB port and it says it successfully installed the drivers and is connected.
I click "connect without setting up device", then launch Trimble Data Transfer.
It connects to the ACU under a connection described as Survey Controller on Active Sync.
I browse to my files and attempt to transfer the files. I get a pop-up that states "Trimble Remote Device manager has stopped working". Typical Trimble fashion.
At this point there is a screen open that shows some gears spinning..Converting....
Locked up.
Any suggestions?
I use a Recon with Survey Pro. I don't have to do anything--it's just like plugging in a thumb drive. I've never used a Trimble ACU.
Try not launching Trimble Data Transfer and see if you can transfer files.
Dave
I can see the device in windows explorer and transfer files that way.
I was using Trimble Data Transfer to do conversions during download.
Perhaps now is a good time to look at a different work flow.
I was able to download a .DC file ok, so I think it is just typical Trimble programming with that particular file conversion (GDM).
No ACU here but a TSC2 with Trimble Access
did you update your data transfer to the latest version?
AND
When using Trimble Acces you'll have to update the conversion drivers through Trimble Access Instalation Mananger and there you update the 'Office software'. That's the part that converts your job to a dc by transferring to the pc.

There are definately some issues with older Trimble gear and some Windows 7 USB ports.
For example...
The HP laptop on my desk runs Win7 x64 Pro
Our TSC3's connect straight in, happy as.
Our digital camera connects.
But our DiNi wont work - no 'bong' noise on connection - and Trimble Data Transfer does not find anything to connect to.
But...
On our spare desktop machine - also HP, also Win7 x64 Pro the DiNI works fine.
Looks like a Hardware or Driver issue to me, but I so far I have not had the time to chase a real solution - I just use the desktop machine for downloading
