Is there anybody using this combination or does it even pay to try?

Explain the Access part please.
I've done plenty of F2F with Carlson CE in the field and some in the office.

Trimble Access, it's a different platform.

:-/ I didn't know. I thought you might be talking about Microsoft Access which I had no clue would interact.
Glad I asked first instead of running off sounding stupid.
I hate when that happens.
Carlson can handle a lot of dc file formats, but the easiest is to export your coordinates from the dc as a .txt file, which Access can do. F2F symbols and linework are driven by the descriptions of your points, so as long as you can get the points into Carlson there won't be any problems.

That's how I do it now. But I was watching this video where the guy is leveraging Civil3D and making the importing of symbols seamless.

That's okay, you're just trying to help and I appreciate it.
Cheers

While I don't feel the need to watch the entire 6+min video. If your question if how to utilize F2F with carlson with Civil3d all you need is a property setup Civil3d (this alone can be a pain but once it's setup it works like a charm) and a .txt file in whatever format suites your needs.
Export .txt file from your Carlson collector or by whatever means you use to create a .txt file and then import said txt file into Civil3d.
We only import .txt files nowadays, whether it be GPS work or Conventional work the import file into CIvil3d is always a txt file.
With a proper setup all your symbols and lines come in with minimal office cleanup.
I guess you can upload your desckey file to Access if you would like symbols and line work generated on the dc map.

Yes that's the route I'm going to try. It seems a lot easier to have the soft keys set up on the screen and not have to type all the various codes. (+7,-7,etc)

I just started using Carlson after 12 years of using B and E to start and end lines with Land Desktop. As long as the code for the line you're trying draw is in the F2F code list you don't have to use the +7 -7 for linework. For instance if EC is in you code list Carlson will connect all the EC shots without any special coding to start or end the line and as long as the wildcard is toggled on it will connect all the EC1, EC2 ......shots. Seems to work real good so far, not nearly as quirky as LDD and you only need two shots to make a line.
I tried using it in the field. I spent more time trying to decide how it would draw the lines than taking shots. It would be great for a simple survey like a road with a driveway and house. But I was trying to use it in a large apartment complex with crazy line work and it was too much. We do use it for all our symbols though.
