Don Meredith, the Dallas Cowboys and SMU quarterback and Monday Night Football icon, died Sunday evening in Santa Fe, N.M. He was 72.
He was the original Dallas Cowboy, signing a personal services contract on Nov. 28, 1959, two months before the franchise officially gained admittance into the NFL.
From Mount Vernon, Texas, he never played a home game outside of North Texas.
Ol' Mac Davis was a good choice to play him in North Dallas Forty.
Back a few months ago I was headling
at a great big night club
and they put me up at what they call the Star Suite:
Now here I am headling at one
of the biggest night clubs
in the country
and I wake up at eight o'clock in the morning
in this Star suite all by myself.
Aah that's what I said "Aah".
But I did what I've always done to cheer myself up
I picked up my guitar I sat down
and wrote me a little song.
Now this is how it feels to be alone
at the top of the hill and trying to figure out why
Oh Lord it's hard to be humble
when you're perfect in every way.
I can't wait to look in the mirror'
cos I get better looking each day
to know me is to love me
I must be a hell of a man.
O Lord it's hard to be humble
but I'm doing the best that I can.
I used to have a girlfriend
but I guess she just could'n't complete
with all of these lovestarved women
who keep clamouring at my feet.
Well I'll probably find me another
but I guess they're all in awe of me
who cares I never get lonesome
cause I treasure my own company.
Oh Lord it's hard
to be humble
when you're perfect in every way.
I can't wait to look in the
mirror'
cos I get better looking each day
to know me is to love me
I must be a hell of a man.
O Lord it's hard to be humble
but I'm doing the best that I can.
I guess you can say I'm a loner
a cowboy outlaw tough and proud
Well I could have lots of friends if I wanted
but then I wouldn't stand out from the crowd
some folks say that I'm "egotistical
well I don't even know what that means
I guess it has something to do with the
way that I fill out my skintight blue jeans.
Oh Lord it's hard to be humble
when you're perfect in every
way.
I can't wait to look in the mirror'
cos I get better looking
each day
to know me is to love me
I must be a hell of a man
O Lord it's hard to be humble
we are doing the best that we can.
"turn out the lights, the party's over"
I grew up just down the road from Dandy Don's hometown and have heard many things of his accomplishments on and off the gridiron and have admired him for his swagger and honest candor of his life and how he saw others.
I can remember when he played at Sunday noon, the tithes were made early in the service because it did not matter if the preacher was thru with his sermon or not the men and boys left the church in time to see the game. Soon, it became a custom to end half hour before the game.
:star:
One of his favorite sayings pertaining to any musing from Howard Cosell on Monday Night Football about what might have happened if so and so had not gotten hurt, traded, etc. was "if ifs and buts were candy and nuts, we'd all have a Merry Christmas." He was one of the good ones and will certainly be missed.
I remember a game where the home team was losing very badly. The camera focused on a man who looked up and gave a middle finger salute. Dandy Don said that the man was saying his team is number one!
Sad news indeed.
I remember one Monday Night, the camera guy caught a hot well endowed sweetie walking up the steps and he said "Looks like two puppies playing under a blanket".
I'm sure that would get you fired today.
Not the best football player in the world, but not many with a bigger heart and a bigger sense of humor.
Adios Amigo.
He was a helluva player and even a better commentator.
He is missed.
I remember him crying after the Ice Bowl. I think it was the first time that I saw a professional athlete cry after a game. He must have put his heart into that game and it was a tough loss.
He definitely made MNF enjoyable. RIP. It appeared that he had to have a few snorts to deal with Cosell.
