Malcolm passed away this morning.
In addition to his service to NYSALPLS, Malcolm held positions in ACSM/NSPS (Governor, Director), Design Professionals Coalition of Long Island (Director), and the Nassau Suffolk Civil Engineers (President, Director). He was active on numerous committees in all of these organizations, including one determining NAFTA's effect on land surveys.
Malcolm's father, Arthur Shaw, was instrumental in organizing the NY State Association, and since 1986 the Arthur D. Shaw Memorial Fund has
awarded more than $75,000 in scholarships to students from major universities, surveying college programs, and community colleges statewide.
Over the past 25 years, I cannot remember a time when Malcolm Shaw wasn't traveling to speaking engagements or attending meetings in furtherance of the surveying profession. I am sure he was familiar to surveyors from all 50 states and many other countries as well.
The NY State Association released this statement a few hours ago.
"Dear NYSAPLS Members and Friends,
It is with a heavy heart I share the loss of a great friend, mentor and inspiration to our organization, as well as all surveyors across the nation. NYSAPLS Trustee, Malcolm Shaw, passed away this morning.
There are no words to express how deeply saddened we are. We will be in touch as soon as we have more information on funeral services.
With deepest sympathy to his wife Janice and family, our prayers are with you. May the comfort of friends and family help you through this difficult time.
Amber Carpenter, Director of Operations"
Here in the NYC Metropolitan area, the firm of Erlandsen, Crowell and Shaw have been providing land surveying services since 1955, and they have been leaders in the field of City Surveying. Malcolm will be missed by many.
I knew Malcolm as a NYSAPLS Trustee. His input at the Director's meetings was always level headed and professional. He had a way of seeing the big picture; the wise elder voice that helped us put things in perspective. He will be missed, on MANY levels, for sure.
Quite frankly, he was just a great guy!
Ken
Condolences to Malcom's family, friends and colleagues. Rest in peace sir.
In discussions, Malcolm was always the voice of reason and, as Ken said, able to keep things in perspective.
For me, one of the bright spots of attending the ACSM/NSPS meetings was the opportunity to chat with Malcolm. I last had that opportunity just a couple of weeks ago at the meeting in Sandusky, Ohio.
Quite frankly and whatever all else, he will be missed.
I have had the pleasure of working with Malcolm for many years within the NYSAPLS organization. Although we had not always agreed on certain issues, we were able to have good discussions. I will greatly miss his guidance and friendship. With heavy heart, I thank Malcolm for all he did done for the profession, his mentorship, his guidance, and most of all, his friendship.
