One of the greatest advantages we have found for scanning is the other data that is collected. Yesterdays work was the scanning of some stockpiles opposite this view. Since Scanstation 2 we have just been doing 360 degree scans on every project and this morning our client called and said "hey we need to know the volume on the pile being at the end of the conveyor belt, can you come back in and shoot it in". Well about 1 minute later he had the volume data in his inbox.

This afternoon, he came in and signed a 2 year agreement for monthly scanning of his entire facility.

yes, i remember that the problem with scanning was that you always have TOO much data!
CAD guys spent a lot of time deleting points.

I can see that this would be good for open pit mining projects.

We had something similar recently

http://www.customspatialsolutions.com.au/CSS/Recent_Projects/Entries/2012/11/26_Rundle_Mall.html

The client came back and changed a few of the facades due to heritage buildings, etc. The modelling was therefore easier, and we didn't need any additional fieldwork. No variation required. 😀
