This week a cousin of mine starts his 270 mile hike on the Long Trail in Vermont. I had never heard of this hike and was wondering if any of the folks here at beerleg had ever hiked it.
Many years ago when in Boy Scouts I hiked 2 - 50 mile segments. One of which was also the App Trail where they overlapped. My troop would do a 50 mile hike every summer so it would take 5 years to do it all.
I fondly remember the 2 sections I did.
I hiked the southern half in the 80's. Pretty fun.
Sounds like maybe part of the Appalachian Trail (the AT).
I have done some pieces of the AT a few times.
The southern 100 miles of the Long Trail is also the AT.
This cousin, a mere pup at 31 years old, is setting his long term goals at hiking the Appalachian Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail in the next 5 or 10 years. This is his shake-down trip. Admirable ambition if he can find the time and $$$$. I'm jealous.
I hiked the long trail years back with my father when I was 14, we took our time averaging 12-15 mile days. Was a fantastic trip hiking through the "green tunnel" of Vermont. One of the best memories I have is walking though Mad River Glen ski area in the densest fog I have ever encountered, was 5-6ft visibility, and pretty magical.
