Yesterday was a good day for a ride. There was a swap meet at an old gas station turned "museum" on old Highway 66 about seventy miles from here and I had absolutely no excuse for not going.
The ride was wunnerful. The meet was a typical get-together of greyed and aging motorcycle-delusional wasps. I've noticed a lot more trikes this year. AARP must be giving an insurance discount it you don't have to remember to put a foot on the ground at intersections...:pinch:
A couple of notable things:
The museum has a couple of nice 100 year old Triumphs. Originally designed and built by a mechanically-minded German gent, their design and construction superiority to the comparable American 1909 motorcycle was readily evident. Beautiful specimens.
One of Gary Nixon's 200cc short track Trials Cub, autographed. A homespun Okie from Anadarko, Ok., Gary went on to win most of the AMA Grand National Championships in the sixties. My sister's hubby use to pit for Nixon before he became a star. One of his best stories: Gary use to introduce himself to the other racers at the line by asking, "Which one of you mother-fu*kers is gonna come in second?" :snarky:
Fun was had by all and I was home by nap-time after a 150 mile ride. Being the first good long ride this Spring I am a little stiff. But at least I didn't get sore by getting into a fist fight with a llama...;-)
PS - Bikes have sure changed. Out of the probably 200 American-made scooters I saw there, mine and an old shovel were the only v-twins that still only had one cam. I had no idea I was riding an antique. Time marches on....
Sounds like fun Paden, and I didn't know #9 was from your part of the world. Love your self description of "motorcycle-delusional".
Hey Paden,
Have you ever taken a ride down to Meers for one of their burgers?
We drove there from Lawton 8 or 9 years ago after visiting DP.
It looks like there are a couple of routes you could take while
avoiding the interstate. If you go to Meers make sure you give
a hearty laugh when the waitress asks if you'd like dessert.
