That comment reminded me of a blimp-like herbivore described in the book "Venus on the Half Shell" that propelled itself around via flatulence. I may still have my copy out in the garage. Only science fiction nerds will remember that jewel.

I've never read the book. The Wikipedia writeup sounds like the author was having a lot of fun with insider jokes. The cover art is almost stereotypical of bad SF from the period, with scantily clad macho and feminine characters.?ÿ It isn't clear how the guy survives space with only a breathing helmet, and why she doesn't need even that.

@bill93 I never said that it was a great example of the genre (it isn't). It was was reasonably entertaining though. I bought it because I thought that Vonnegut had wrote it (I have probably read all of his books). It was certainly not Farmer's best effort either (I have read many of his books also). In my experience, the covers of many (if not most) books have little if anything to do with the story.

@holy-cow I hear ya buddy. My taste in books is pretty broad, so aside from "romance" novels (argh), I have read a lot of different books. Many of my friends are turned off by science fiction anything, but others are real nerds. Different strokes for different folks. ????

Good SF poses a thoughtful answer to a "what if?" or reflects on human nature in the course of telling an interesting story. There are a lot of books and movies filed under the category that fail that test.
