I'm in Day 1 of a 2-day parent orientation at UC San Diego. I'm struggling to keep my eyes open. These lecture help seats aren't the greatest, but I can sleep just about anywhere when I need to.

It's been several years since my last hearing test. However, I had stellar results. After the test, the doctor told me he had never seen results like mine (he appeared to be in his sixties at the time). In fact, he had me repeat the test because he just couldn't believe it. Same results. He said I could hear stuff that nobody should be able to hear and I was the first of his patients who had actually heard them. Apparently, they are only in the test to prove that humans can't hear those sounds and to weed out the cheaters, but I heard them. He asked if I had trouble hearing people talking to me even when they are right in front of me when there's some noise in the background. I mentioned that I have that trouble most particularly at the bowling alley -- I can hear every pin crashing and I can hear conversations that are several lanes away, but I can't hear the guy that's right in front of me trying to have a conversation. Anyway, he said that this is exactly why I have that problem. I can hear so much of everything around me that it impairs what's right in front of me. How weird, right?

So if you meet me at a conference and there's peripheral noise going on and I don't hear you talking to me, well, that's why. And I apologize in advance. 😉

I'll be the guy over in the corner whispering, "Hey, Wendell.........................it's me.........................over here by beer sign."

I can barely hear in a crowded room. I have to turn the TV up to hear a movie. But I can hear twigs breaking in nature, or leaves rustling. Have no explaination, but it sure makes some people mad, think I'm doing it on purpose.

Ability to sort out multiple sounds is often the first thing to go. One of the causes can be the little bones in the ear get looser joints and rattle with the sounds so they get mixed together before getting to the cochlea. In electronics we would characterize it as intermodulation.
