Here, Down Under, Christmas comes in Summer.

KiwiChristmas

NZ pretty much shuts down and takes a long well-deserved Holiday.

I'm out of here until a couple of weeks into the New Year.

Wishing peace and good will to all.

3 weeks holiday? In the middle of summer?!?ÿ I thought only teachers, Congress, and hockey players did that.

@norman-oklahoma?ÿ

Employee's get four weeks paid annual leave here plus the public holidays which amounts to almost another two weeks. So over Christmas (think US summer break) most offices close for at least two weeks to get leave balances down while client demand is low as they are all on holiday too.

Work hard play hard down here, horrified to hear what leave provisions sound normal in US employment agreements.

Most of the world takes a lot more time off than Americans do, that is for sure.?ÿ But as one of our Presidents once said, "the chief business of the American people is business".

@norman-oklahoma I get more paid time off than I can use.?ÿ My company's majority ownership are Orthodox Jews and they give us off for all the typical seven or eight federal holidays, plus an additional 10 or more major Jewish holidays (depending on the lunar calandar).?ÿ With those days, and, if I used my negotiated PTO, I'm looking at 50 paid days off a year.

@chris-bouffard Can you cash in your remaining PTO if you don't use it??ÿ And/or will they pay it upon your departure??ÿ I know some orgs have "use it or lose it" PTO, and as year-end approaches they basically just shrug and say, "Pity about that unused time off, if we weren't so busy you could use it."

@frozennorth no, I'm not in a use it or lose it position, I'm an executive so that's not an option for me, but, my employees have the option of either carrying 5 days a year over into the next year or cashing out.?ÿ I get more than compensated in other ways in my benefit package being one of people running the company.?ÿ Last year we recieved recognition for being one of the 50 fastest growing businesses in the state, we can in at 32, which is pretty amazing for this state.
