That machine is why Charlie Tucker says to intersect the tangents when retracing railroad curves. I think.

That is just one of the team of machines that work on the UP tracks I can see from here.

The shorter one is a regulator which is used grade the ballast after the tamper has done its magic. Basically the twisted offspring of a motor grader and street weeper hookup.
