I have been using an HP M2727NF Laserjet printer copier scanner fax for the last five years. Starting to have problems. I have loved the ease of use of this machine. With the $120 extended ink cartridge, it lasts most of the year.

Time to replace it, and it has been discontinued! I want to stay with a 4 in 1 unit. But would like to get one that also does 11"x17"

Any suggestions on a new model that doesnt cost a fortune on ink? I don't really need color.

The question of ink and toner costs has gotten easier to answer. There are some international standards for page yield, ISO/IEC 24711 and a couple of others. There's a set of standard test pages that are printed until the ink or toner runs out. This article on HP's site explains it pretty well--

http://h10060.www1.hp.com/pageyield/en-019/articles/inkjetPageYields.html?cCode=us&jumpid=reg_r1002_usen_c-001_title_r0017

I checked out ink costs on a couple of models when I shopped for a printer last fall. It was possible to find the page yields for each model on the manufacturers' websites, although they didn't make it easy, and then divide that into the cost of the cartridges.

I also wanted 11 x 17, and ended up with a Brother MFC-J6710DW. Of course I'm 98% retired, so my needs are likely different from yours.
