Big Help found it. It was a doe. We talked about taking it as a pet, but opted to let it alone, and let it's momma raise it.

Glad to see you made it out alive.
I remember a time working in some forested hills in southern Oregon. There was a small clearing and we were following a deer trail, carrying all of our equipment. The guy ahead of me stopped to take in a cute view of a fawn at the edge of the clearing. Then we heard the galloping sound and rustling in the brush... it was momma deer and boy was she pissed. We ran up the trail and fortunately, she didn't follow.
Later, some other guys told us about a similar experience. They said you don't ever want to break the line of sight between a fawn and her momma. As soon as momma can't see her kid, she panics.
I'm pretty sure momma could have kicked all our asses without any trouble (we weren't packin').

I am glad no one killed her...she deserves a chance to grow up and do deer things!!! 🙂
Big Help Petted her for 3-4 mins. His touch seemed to relax her. After lifting her tail, to see what gender, and then backing up a little, she jumped up and ran. IF we had wanted to catch her after that, well we would have been at a serious dis-advantage. That little fawn could RUN like everything. If he had not lifted her tail, I suspect she would never have run. She felt intruded upon.
It is good for young people to love and appreciate wildlife.
We never saw, or heard from momma, but I suspect she was not far off.
We moved on.

We once raised a doe. She was a good pet.
And, 2 folks I know about were attacked by "pet" bucks, during rut.
So, it is simply relevant to wheather or not you keep them as pets.
If it were a buck, definately not.
But, possibly with a doe.
So, cut it.

Wifey said basically the same thing. She just doesn't get my sense of humor sometimes...
