Old guy walking down the street today stops and notices me and robotic total station and says while shaking head: Boy surveying isn't what it used to be! to which I replied what in this world is what it used to be sir? Good point young man he said! Now maybe I read more into what he was saying but it kinda burns me up why people think surveying as a profession should be any diffrent than any other profession? why can it not be allowed to progress in technology in peoples minds? they wouldnt be happy if their doctor cut thier skull open cause they complained of migraines and the doctor didnt have a catscan machine. Furthermore people sure as hell would be upset if I showed up with an old transit and some chains to do a survey that would take a week's worth of them paying a ridiculous fee, for something I could knock out in a day or so time with gps and robot. Rant Over thank you

I think you misread his intent. I think he was astounded by the improvement in equipment at the expense of people.

Show up with a transit and chain they will expect $25/hr

Some of these old timers really believe our new equipment will "see thru concrete walls" and "GPS will work anywhere" and the "computer calculates all positions without any user input, like we just plug our equipment together, turn it on and read the answers".

I am amazed at what my clients say some times.

My thought as well. He was probably just making the observation as a way of making conversation.

CC78 - Why are you so ready to be offended?

Old Timer ,,, cc78 HOW OLD ARE YOU?

The old timer who probably was younger than myself would have made the same comment as myself at my dentist.

The relative change in surveying technology since I graduated has been the greatest ever so a passing comment from an old timer is not out of place at all.

I would insult more surveyors by commenting that many surveyors are operating a state of ark not state of art!

A Good Comeback

Went into the local grocery store some years ago. A local carpenter-house builder was approaching the counter and an ancient curmudgeon said "New houses ain't no good".
The carpenter replied "That's why we should build just old ones". Really struck me funny at the time.

A Good Comeback

My grand dad was a builder all his life and really enjoyed looking at new construction until the day he passed away.

He walked up to a busy construction site and was looking at the methods when a workman point to a sign and said "Can't you read? That sign says Men Working"..

Grand dad looked over at him and merely commented "Well, sonny back in my day we could tell without the sign"..
