One of my old friends is the structural C.E. for the test stands. He has been there for decades and they won't let him retire. He still works 2 days a week. He made it to top boss position but asked to be dropped to design lead.
I get to check these tests out sometimes. Great cheap thrill.

I remember touring the facility in the mid 70's and seeing the test stand for the Saturn 5 rocket. Our guide made the statement that "Out of two locations on the Earth that a Saturn V rocket engine has been fired up, we were the first. But unlike the other place, we were able to keep ours on the ground". I was back there in the 90's and got to see a shuttle engine test. Amazing is the only way to describe it. A lot of really high speed activities going on at that place with NASA, NOAA and the Naval Small Craft Training Center. I haven't been there since 9-11, have heard you can't tour any of the Secret Squirrel facilities any more.
