Yes, I find it a bit weird, especially since you can pick up a good used level for the price of a few GPS batteries.?ÿ Always worth having around as a sanity check.

My experience is that correctly used a good total station will out perform any level you might find in a typical surveyor's truck.

Yes, I know you can use different attachments and an invar rod, etc, etc, etc...but that is not usually done in the real world. We used to call it "trig leveling" using the total station and a fixed height rod, but whatever you call it, it works.

That said, I would not feel comfortable not having one. For one, sometimes it is the easiest and best tool for the job, and while you could use a total station, it would be a waste of time in those cases.

I have a high end Topcon autolevel. I bought it on Ebay for $160.?ÿ Pegs perfectly ( or as perfectly as I can see).?ÿ Ran a 1.5 mile loop with a shipload of turns.?ÿ When I read the rod I round the half hundredths to the even .01.?ÿ Closed by .02.?ÿ Can't beat a level for comfort level in vertical control.

I have a level at my current job but it hasn't been used for several years.

At my last job we did a lot of construction staking (commercial buildings) and we used the level quite a bit. I felt that it gave people more confidence in the results. I could show them the book and how the arithmetic worked. Couldn't do that with total station data so easily. That show had value in that setting.?ÿ Construction staking is partly theatre. If the crew loses confidence in the surveyor work will grind to a halt. They will start asking for 3 times more staking than they really need and question everything.?ÿ?ÿ

It should be considering you can complete a survey with one...like when the batteries die or some A-hole forgot to bring a DC...stadia...book every shot. Been there done that...
