One of the Project Engineers I worked with did just that and made a pile of money.
Anyone who's not making money on investments over the last couple of years must be the most unlucky person in the world. You can pretty much throw a dart and hit a stock or commodity that's up 100% or more from it's lows. The trick is making money on the down turns, too, which was pretty much impossible in IRA accounts (no shorting allowed in IRAs) until recently with inverse ETFs. If you can capture some upside in bull markets, and make some gains in bear markets, you're going to be doing pretty well.
I listen to a lot of CNBC radio on Sirius, and they said for the first time in years, flow of cash into equity mutaul funds is positive. That means that people are finally getting back into the market, which is a bullish signal. I'd expect the bull market to continue for a couple of years. The next bear market, like 2000's dot com crash, and 2006's housing market/finanicial crash, will probably be caused by panic over the states, counties, and cities missing payments on debt. The only way I don't see that happening is if we have another 10-year bull run like we did under Clinton, and serious budget cuts, and economy grows it's way out of disaster.
