Reminds me of last evening.?ÿ I was at a board meeting where the featured program had to do with a new audiology office that we have opened in a very different location.?ÿ We had about 15 people in our meeting room plus five speakers telling us via ZOOM all about the new facility and what they do.?ÿ The entire time, I wanted to break in and say. "Please speak up and face the camera the entire time so I can read your lips."
One of their focus areas is identifying hearing problems with children from 0 to 3 years of age.?ÿ Another board member received a five-minute answer to the question, "How do you do a hearing test on a tiny baby?"?ÿ Quite a fascinating answer.?ÿ After the meeting I told him something I had learned many years ago in a graduate school class on Environmental Aspects of Livestock Production.?ÿ One of the many topics covered included determining the effects of various types of sound on animals in confinement housing.?ÿ A specific example involved dairy cows.?ÿ They learned that cows react similarly to humans when taking a hearing test.?ÿ We don't normally think about it, but, when we expect to hear something very quiet, we hold our breath because respiration makes more noise than we realize.?ÿ The cows would get trained to hear a certain sound at specific time intervals.?ÿ As the sound became more difficult to hear, the cow would hold her breath until she heard the sound.?ÿ If the sound was made, and she was still holding her breath, they knew her limit in that particular range.
