200 years ago they raised the Bonnie Blue Flag over a new nation which is now known as Louisiana.
I saw that in one of my news feeds this morning. I don't recall that from any of my history classes. Granted, little Suzy sat next to me and distracted me from much of my learning. 🙂
The City of Milford is 373 years since founded....You western guys are the little brothers of the country 😉
St Augustine, FL ... 545 years young ... 215 years ago two of my ancestors were imprisoned in the dungeon below the Castillio de San Marcos for their role in the little known rebellion of 1795 against the Spanish Government of East Florida.
Here is a link to a synopsis of the event Rebellion of 1795

Not exactly.
The majority of Louisiana was part of the Louisiana purchase.
The Louisiana portion of the Republic of West Florida was, for the most part, that portion of current Louisiana, North of Lake Pontchartrain and east of the Mississippi River.
It also included land in current Mississippi, Alabama and Florida.
Thanks for the link Dan. I certainly remember the Louisiana purchase but could not recall the West Florida bits.
Very interesting Randy. Thanks.
If St Augustine Was a Woman........
.......she'd be mighty P.O.'d at you adding 100 years to her age........(founded 1565)
If St Augustine Was a Woman........
oops Sorry
Must be why they call that portion of Louisiana the "Florida Parishes" ... Signs of that Republic are posted along that stretch of I-10, too.
Also known as the Florida Parishes.
Opps, Mr. Cliff beat me to it.
I-12
I think it was a history prof (Sam Hyde) from SELU who made the effort to get the signs.
BTW; There is always this rosy reflections of these original West Fl founders/rebels but in reality there were a lot of rogues and unsavory characters and other opportunistic individuals. It wasn't all about freedom.
Another reason why Louisiana is one of the most corrupt states that has a star on the flag and still continues to this time.
Nobody is begging you to stay here, if it is so bad, you could always go home to New Jersey, just saying.
Sorry, I was still on my first cup of coffee and trying to get kids out the door for school.
Early morning brain fart.
Thanks for the advice Dan but I will probably will not take it..
Yesterday, when I walked to get my local homemade gordito for lunch and pick up a copy of the locale oracle that posts city and parish proceeding. I have few projects before assorted planning commissions so I can read the published minutes.
I noticed a small article that really ruffled my feathers.
Our Gov, GOP wonder kid and stellar national fundraiser for his party (who btw I voted for because of his ethics reform posturing) appointed a local owner of an engineering company to the STATE POLICE Advisory Board.. A small select group of individuals who push through recommendations and policy.
I have known this person both professionally and personally for a long time and never had a very good opinion of him.
Matter of fact, he was involved in the Price scandal here if you know what I am talking about and called before the Fed GJ.
Resigned alcoholic Mayor Price who is off to 40 months in Fed Prison for an endless list of malfeasance and is also facing various state charges for perjury etc. I can't list all his (Price) transgressions because it would take all ^%^8ing day.
But he did except gifts from various engineers, lawyers etc such as fishing and hunting trips, trips to Aspen and Pebble Beach and on and on and on and on.
I guess the BOR does not read the papers or watch the TV news because I have seen NO action at all taken against these firms who had exclusive no-bid contracts worth millions of dollars for years and years.
I guess the Gov's staff does not think it is the important also, so they appoint a person to the STATE POLICE Board to lick up some of the perks associated with that position after licking at the public trough for years.
I did write a letter to the editor of the T-P on this but I know it will never be published.
Personally, I think the future generations of Louisiana need more exemplary officials in government.
If you want to live with the status quo, so be it.
Hey Edwin will be out soon. Maybe you can get a yard sign.
New Jersey is wonderful this time of year, or so I hear.
Be there or be square.
My son was telling me they'd had a big anniversary party in P'cola last fall/ i think Something about city of 5 flags or some such.
I do miss the pizza and the Pine Barrens and the ocean.
40 years here next spring.
😉
Well there you go, Jersey is calling you home.
My entire life, today.;-)
