As today decided to thin out the accumulation of 15 years in current office of accrued papers, pegging plans , old survey magazines that you always say you will get around to re reading. I kept the conference souvenirs, including all the OS business cards. Found some notes on my Washington and Oregon trip with Dugger. That brief read interlude streamed back great memories.

Tossed out drafts of jobs from the 80s, faithfully hand drawn. Tossed out plans from 1990 all faithfully Cad drawn! found my original 1978 job book that I have faithfully treasured. Now 32 years old and older than a number of posters.

Found Programs I wrote for HP 35 that had long since gone to survey heaven in the 80s.

Came across an old passport with photo in early 80s for the China trip. Thought the youthful mug shot was someone else!

Now have 20 years of surveying on the laptop. Sure takes up far less room than the bulky plans. Some paper copies others on drafting film ranging inside From A0, approx 840 x 1200 cm size to A4 approx 21 x 30 cm.

Was staggered at the combined weight of all the paper. Felt extremely sad tossing out years of blood and sweat, but reality they were never revisited in their cabinets. sort of laid to rest just in case. "Rapidograph pens", plotter pens all now redundant in a short window of time as plans drawn and lodged electronically into our Lands title Office.

Came across my license survey plan, faithfully calculated long hand and hand drafted on the Land Title Office medium of the day, blue linen that era was 1977/78. Now over 32 years have slipped rapidly by since gaining my license and hanging up my shingle. What a ride.

Oldest relic found was 1958 survey plan of my father's land subdivision that he used as his sale plan for his beach side subdivision, where blocks sold then for 375 pounds ( $750 ). Now 500 times that price. That was a keeper.

In one way a sad afternoon letting go so much sweat and tears...But it is as Deral and those who have retired would know that the faithfully accumulated pass their use by date.

One day you young bucks will appreciate what we old pharts are going through....

By the way yesterday I saw Leica's latest toy in operation. Fully automated TS with camera. I feel privileged to be one of the few who have ridden the technological wave from the stayed traditional methodical hard yacka to today where you can measure between points with out cutting a line or measure between marks interrupted by mountains. Where will it end? I think at 64 it is time to finish up with some property development interspersed with surveying....

Good on ya, Mate!

I feel it would be very difficult to part with anything that wasn't decomposing or in grave disrepair...

Maybe, some day, the space will no longer be available. But until then, I will keep every scrap of paper.....Now if I could just get it organized 😉
