I have a few life-long friends that I keep in contact with regularly. Our main topic of conversation is usually all the other friend we have bumped into since we last spoke. A few weeks ago I was talking with a buddy and he related to me he had seen an old school buddy of ours, a guy named "Sid".
Sid never quite rose to a level of competency in his adult life, probably due to alcohol. Sid outlived both his parents (with whom he had lived his entire life) and won his folks house by default. It took five years for him to lose the place to taxes and irresponsible financial borrowing. Sid has spent the last few years "living in a van down by the river" and in the alley behind my buddy's muffler shop.
My buddy hadn't seen Sid for a while and feared the worst. The other day he rolled up in a nice new pickup truck and looked like he had been eating regularly. Apparently Sid had at some point become the responsibility of social services. He is now 100% disabled due to alcoholism and cashing checks each month courtesy the taxpayers.
So when I read your advice to "start drinking heavily" I realized I had missed that boat. I should have taken your advice years ago....Then maybe by now I could have one of those "free rides" like Sid. 😉
I've met a few Sid's in my life. I wouldn't say it was a bad life; just not for me. I just couldn't stomach the hangovers...

Proof that diabetes can kill you. He was 63 when he died of diabetes complications. Both of his parents died at 47 from diabetes complications.
