Here is an interesting device that can be driven in and set by hand to secure any kind of equipment, or act as an anchor for wind.
Still easily defeated by bolt cutters.

It's been awhile since I've attempted to cut wire rope with bolt cutters, but my recollection is that it didn't work very well, producing a flat array of substantially intact strands rather than a successful cut. In any case, few opportunistic thieves -- the kind that typically make off with survey instruments while the operator is relatively close by -- carry bolt cutters, and even fewer carry cable cutters, so the concept of an anchor deployable underground looks promising for use with a robotic gun.
I often cable my robot to a fixed object when one is available, and have been looking for a good open-field solution. The Duckbill is a little pricey for disposable use, at about $8.00 apiece for the ones with a 1/8" cable. However, I found some trapping anchors that I'm going to try out. They cost me about $1.50 each shipped, so leaving them behind won't be especially painful.
