Okay, I know this was answered several times on our "old" board but I hope you don't mind me asking again. (I don't want to spend hours searching for a solution).

My computer search functions (yahoo, google, bing, etc.) yields several results of which when I click on one it re-directs me to some sort of advertisements instead of the link I want. Do I have adware, malware, a virus, etc...? Can anyone reccomend a fix? By the way my current anti-virus software is AVG.

Thanks so much!:-)
John

Sounds like adware/malware to me.
Go get superantispyware from superantispyware.com
Run a full scan.

No antimalware program out there catches everything. I'd suggest Malwarebytes' Antimalware and use SpyBot for it's immunization feature.

Wendell,

Will this remove my problems AND protect me from future problems or just the protect me in the future. First, I'm just looking for a fix.
Thanks!

John

Both. There's no perfect solution, but with E's suggestion coupled with my two suggestions, you'll have a fighting chance. The SpyBot Immunize feature helps block future threats.

If you want to completely "cleanse" your machine I believe the best resource out there is bleepingcomputer.com. Typically someone there will have you run "HijackThis" to create a log to post from which many helpful people there can suggest a solution for your problem. That being said a MalWareBytes full scan in rebooted "safe mode" will cure 99.5% of your problems.

You will also want to check your list of approved websites for pop-ups. Now viruses are adding in sites to your approved list so that they will automatically come up. This just recently happened to me and I cleaned the virus and still had the pop-ups until I discovered them in my approved pop-ups list.

Gotta weigh in here because I felt like I hit the mother-lode last month when I had to run down a virus. Figured I'd share...

Like Blake mentioned, BleepingComputer is a great forum. I've used it for research many time. Another one I've found is the BullGuard Forum.

Here is a link for BullGuard's tutorial on finding and running the Hijack This tool: BullGuard HJT Tutorial

Then, after running HJT and saving the log file, I found this site that gave me 3 articles on "Understanding and Interpreting Hijack This Log Files".

Understanding and Interpreting HJT 1

Understanding and Interpreting HJT 2

Understanding and Interpreting HJT 3

And, for the geeks that I know are out there, this site explains all the different coding for the different types of files in the HJT file:
System Lookup HJT Lists

and to search the specific items:
System Lookup - Search HJT items
