So my kid is off to college next fall. We purchased a 2-in-1 laptop that folds over to a tablet for them. Not a super high-end computer, the kid is an undeclared major who likes science but also is an artist, hence the tablet feature. It's a Lenovo Yoga 6 running Windows 11. I'm looking for advice on keeping this thing secure while at school. Both software and Windows built-in security features. Is the Windows Defender adequate for virus & malware protection, or should I install 3rd party security, perhaps with a paid subscription? I've mainly used the free version of Avast, but it's a pest, constantly pushing offers to buy this or that feature. I want something that will do the job quietly.

Are there any softwares that can aid in recovering a stolen laptop?

What about all the "convenience" features of Windows? I've skipped over those in the past, but I'm wondering if it would be helpful and safe enough to allow the computer to be linked/synched with the kid's phone?
