Any all you all got cherry trees?
What do you do about bugs?
That poster: RADAR, sure is a swell guy
I don't know about the bugs, but I grew up with 3 cherry trees in my back yard and the number of birds of all species I killed off of those things would sicken you, lol.
My neighbors have a cherry tree. They don't maintain it or even pick the delicious cherries that grow on it. A couple of years ago, I saw what I thought was a volunteer tree sprouting up about 3 tenths from our common fence. So, my bright idea was to transplant that into a half-barrel and see if I could get it to go. turns out it was a root from the tree that had gone under the fence and then come close enough to the surface to sprout new growth.
So, I hacked that root away from the tree and transplanted it anyway. The first year, it didn't look so good. This spring, it is growing like wildfire. I have 3 shoots growing up right now. I figure I'll let it go wild this season and then, this winter, I'll hack all but the strongest growth coming up. That'll be my tree. Hopefully, I'll buy a home where I can plant it before it gets too big for this barrel!
As for bugs, I haven't had any issue with the cherry tree. My squash tends to get some kind of gnat/fly under the leaves. I have a pump sprayer with soapy water that takes care of those just fine. Works for the tomatoes as well. My blueberries are doing alright, too. As I think of it, I have a lot of gardening to do this weekend...

I don't know about cherry trees, but many fruit trees bought from the nursery are grafted with a strong root stock and a more desirable fruit-producing upper part. So a sprout from the root wouldn't grow the same cultivar as the branches of the tree. Good luck with yours.

I knew that this offshoot may not produce anything. But it was more of an experiment just to see if I could get it to grow. If it produces, then I'll be very happy!
