Out for a sail during my brief "stay-cation" at home last week.
We threw the boat in Sesuit Harbor Saturday for a sail with the MIL, the SIL and her boyfriend Bryan Baker (Frontier Precision out in CO area, Software Manager, for those who know him)
The Sister in Law shall remain nameless out of respect for her wish to not be identified online.
It was a bumpy day. Winds were in the upper 20's to lower 30's (that's knots to you non-sailer types) and small craft advisories were issued. Since my current boat is about 19' that applied to us. I reefed my main down a step and then forgo the jib. We had a nice although slow sail and were able to sail out then back in the harbor without assistance, or rowing!
Sunday was much calmer with winds in the 4-6 knot range. Just enough to keep us moving, the sun on our backs for warmth, and a pleasant sail with full sails this day.
This is what El Viento looks like with a reef on and the jib up.
This little boat is a light wind boat and easily overpowered with all sails up. I took a 6 hour sail myself last Sunday and even though the winds were light it's much easier to manage with a reef in and the jib up ... I was still a little quicker than my buddy with the 16' Lynx, a Cape Cod Catboat built at Arey's Pond Boatyard.
Arey's Pond Boatyard sponsers a Catboat Regatta and gathering which we attended this year. Our class was the gaff rigged traditional wooden boat design instead of the catboat classes. At least we were welcome even though it was another light wind day and most people motored tot he finish. My lack of a motor prevented us from finishing in time so we turned in late and made the party even later! At least there wasn't any threat of us receiving any awards! The course runs through a channel we call "The Narrows" and the tide does rip there!
Many days of sailing and fun this past weekend. Bryan and I are learning to kiteboard. he's had lessons, I have the kite and board! We did some kite flying just so we can get the hang of maneuvering the big kites. We both have training kites so the big kite is a new experience for me although Bryan has flown a 5 meter kite. My boarding kite is a 12 meter! (any kiteboarders out there? I'm looking for an XL harnress!)
That's my Cape Cod update for the end of summer labor day extravaganza!!

I don't remember seeing any reports on the Grand Canyon trip. Or is that still to come? And if it has come and gone, did you find the boat from the Birdseye expedition?
That is my real vacation starting 9/13...we arrive Phoenix about 11:30...pick up our bag from Joe and head north. Are you going to give me any hints on where the boat is located? That was an awesome video!!
Don
It was at a Grand Canyon museum run by the Park Service - but that's all my BIL could remember. Let me try to do a little digging.
BTW - like your boat. I've crewed on a Lightning Class and a 470, but on lakes.
This may be the place:

And the boat about half way down the page that is being worked on may be the boat in question. I'll try to scan the pics my BIL gave me a while back and post them as well.
Yes, that's it.
Here are a couple of pics my BIL took several years ago:
Rich, you might enjoy the movie of the Colorado river survey. Those little boats riding the rapids with one guy rowing and another splayed out on the bow!
