Angel,

Since you are going to Maui have you ever taken the drive on the Hana Highway(SR 360) from Maui proper to Hana? If not you should try it. You won’t forget the scenery. Hana is a really nice place, so laid back. Airfare from OR to HI is probably about the same as me flying from Orlando to Atlanta. I’m jealous, can I go too?

ps: if you come across any good herbs while in Maui I would happily reimburse you with profit for your trouble. 😀

Have a great time on your trip! B-)

Yes, Angel you should.
We drove the Road to Hana 20 years ago, still remember its beauty. Leave first thing in the morning so you can take your time and enjoy the whole day.

ps: leave the herbs alone. 😀

Thanks, Guys!!!

Wendell has been before, but this will be my first time on Maui. I can't wait!! Tuesday morning we leave out of Seattle. The tickets were over $1000 for the both of us but I got ours for $15 total because I used my air miles. (They make you pay the tax and air fee. 😐 )

We plan to go watch the sunrise on Wed morning up at Haleakala. Wendell figures we'll still be on Pacific time, body wise, so it would be easier to go sooner during our trip than later.

LOL @ "Herbs"!! I plan on indulging in some fine 100% Kona Coffee whilst I am there!! That's all the herbs for me!! B-)

If you would bring me a pound of 100% Kona, For which I will pay, including shipping, my wife would be quite happy. We are celebrating our 15 year anniversary next week.

Congrats!!!

I can do that. Last time I was there I got the 100% Kona at Costco for $20 a pound. Otherwise it winds up to be $30 - $40 a pound at the other places. Do you have a patricular brand of Kona that you would like or?? Let me know...

It's only a three hour difference in time so you should catch up in a day or so.

Have a great time. Never been to Maui, only the Big Island.

Brand is not a problem. All we have been able to find for a while is a Kona Blend. Not bad but not as good either.

Just let me know how much to send you.

Take a light jacket or sweatshirt. We drove up there from the beech (suits and t-shirts) to watch the sunset. When the sun went down, I thought it was going to snow!
Learned that there is a big temperature change from Elev. = Zero to Elev. = 10,000 ft.

Bring us back some pictures.

Run to the bookstore and pick up Maui Revealed to take with you. In it you'll find a wealth of information for all kinds of interesting, out of the way places. Take the back way to Hana, the one you're not supposed to take rental cars on. The book will guide you like your following a pirate's treasure map to Charles Lindbergh's gravesite. It is a really cool road to travel.
My other recommendation is to head to Bistro Molokini at the Grand Wailea. The BEST onion rings you'll ever eat. I think the atmosphere makes them taste better!

My favorite place to eat on Maui is Café O’lei in Kehei on the main road.

Favorite Beach is Makena Beach the small one across from the Makena hotel (not the big one to the south) you can catch a boat from there out to Molokini and you can snorkel in calm waters for turtles (the wind generally blows from the northeast so the mountain protects that part of the island), also the black sand beach near Hana is cool (not sure what the name of it is).

Will do. I only like the 100% Kona too. ?

Just one box??? I can also ship it from Maui if that makes it easier. Priority mail costs the same no matter where it goes in the USA. 🙂

I'll be in Wailea...really close to Kihei!! We'll have to try that cafe.

I was thinking of going to Molokini...depends on the prices and such. We're just playing it by ear... although I do plan to hit all of the good snorkeling beaches along the way. 🙂

Yeah Wendell says this is the ONLY time I will need to bring warm clothes for Hawaii. 🙂 The first time we went, we went to Oahu and I packed 3 suitcases of luggage. He kept telling me "You wont need all of that. Trust me." He was right. SO the next trip I packed all shorts and wore my pants and T-shirt and sweater on the plane and back. So THIS trip he says do the same thing and I'll be fine. I think I will buy a sweatshirt in Maui just in case.

Re: Haleakala

I've been there three times over the years, and worth it every time. As far as the tee shirt, light jacket and sweat shirt go, yeah bring them all, and wear them all. It's usually below 50 degrees and the wind really blows hard - you'll be glad you dressed warm as soon as you get out of the car.

On the Wailea side, take the road past Makena towards La Perouse Bay for some snorkling on the isolated rocky shoreline. But lock your car and don't leave anything valuable in it if you wander away for very long.

Another road very much less traveled is the road north from Kahului to get to the Kapalua Coast and then around to Lahaina the back way.

Oh, and of course Kona Coffee is grown on the Big Island, but you're right about the pricing - it's one of the few things here (on all the islands) that seems to be much cheaper than on the mainland.

Alooooha!

Brad

Doesn't TJoe's have a 100% Kona coffee. Had it once and it was pretty good.

They use too...for $19.99 a can. You're right. It was pretty dang good!! But for some reason they got rid of it and now they just have a "Kona Blend". Definitely not the same. :-/
