Those who consume large amounts of knowledge are prone to sharing that wealth with others.?ÿ The catch is that this sometimes leads to spewing incorrect information.?ÿ This is an Emily Litella moment.?ÿ Those who were watching Saturday Night Live in the days before the early death of Gilda Radner will recall her character, Emily Litella, frequently making a rant about something only to learn she had misunderstood the topic in the first place.?ÿ She would then look into the camera and say, "Nevermind."

Earlier today, I was Emily.?ÿ We had watched an episode of Gunsmoke that had Matt Dillon riding into Spivey, Kansas.?ÿ Told my wife that was a real town, roughly where it was located and the person for whom it was named.?ÿ She started making notes to pass along to one of her students who is researching the early days of the State.

Thought I could help her so checked up on the founding of Spivey.?ÿ Oops!

I had been thinking of Skiddy, Kansas and Mr. Skiddy, a railroad magnate in 1870.?ÿ Nevermind.

Spivey and Skiddy were little towns not on the main road to anywhere.?ÿ Spivey is much closer to Dodge City, so the writers actually chose a place that Matt Dillon might have traveled to.?ÿ Typically, they make up town names.

I always wondered where Pixley and Hooterville were. Research finds that there is a Pixley, California, but no Hooterville anywhere.?ÿ Clues in the TV shows tended to indicate the fictional location was set in Missouri.
