I have been a Party Chief for almost four years now, doing both home builder work and title surveys. Eventually I'd like to leverage my math minor and my survey experience to study and sit for the SIT exam.
I love surveying. Seeing the power of basic math coupled with the amazing things our instruments can do is exciting. I am at survey company number three, mostly because it seems like that is the only way to get a raise, see different equipment, and work on different types of surveys. At each place, I soak up what I can from the experienced chiefs who are willing to share what they know.
Unfortunately, I don't and haven't worked for companies where an RPLS is readily accessible for mentoring, feedback, or questions. I'm quite sure that there is a lot to the trade that I'm completely oblivious to. I've also never done any commercial work; my only experience is with residential properties.
This is my trade. I like talking and thinking about it. I'd like to learn as much as I can, and I want to work toward making it official. To that end, hello.
Welcome void!

That is really sad. IMHO you MUST have a mentor to succeed in this field. MUST. Period.

A. Yes there is - I've been at it for over 40 years, and I consider myself to still be learning.
B. Surveying is NOT a trade, it is a profession. A tradesman shows up for work, does his job, and goes home. A professional comes in early, prepares ahead of time for the work to be done, executes the work, and spends a hell of a lot of extra time studying, attending meetings & conferences, spending time with peers, reading, researching, more studying, etc. It is exceedingly difficult at times, but for me has been rewarding beyond belief.
Glad you found this site. Don't be afraid to say what you think, and don't be intimidated or annoyed at the answers/advice of others. Most of us are here because we enjoy hearing others opinions, whether we agree with them all or not.
