I started surveying back in '98 for a directional drilling service company that would run the steering tools for the rig to locate the bore underground using the tools telemetry as its primary system but would utilize an above ground magnetic coil system. So basically we would set up on the CL of the bore and ZERO our angle and stake to that established line. Started off training with an old theodolite and a chain, stepped up to a total station with only a tally book as a data collector for the best part of almost 15 years, then to a GPS system. After all this time have barely scratched the surface as to what can be done outside of what I know to do.

Just curious. Is this for oil wells? Or water lines, or other?

and,

how do they do that? (Directional drilling).?ÿ
I'm just curious. Anything you could share, will be enjoyed by me, and probably others too!

thanks!

Directional drilling is often used to install horizontal utilities without digging trenches.?ÿ They dig potholes at intervals and the machine pushes linked rods from one hole to the next, so they can pull fiber, gas, or electric lines in. Similar methods may be used in near-vertical oil and gas wells.

The directional part comes from using an offset wedge on the tip and rotating it so there is no net steering most of the time. When they want it to veer sideways, up, or down, they stop the rotation in the desired position so that when the rod is pushed the wedge bit will go in that direction.

It is all monitored with a locator device on the surface that receives a signal from a module at the tip of the rods.
