Overnight my electricity went off a couple times. This morning when I restarted my computer and Beer Leg came up, something was weird. I scrolled to the bottom of the page to see the official number of posts and threads as I know we are nearing 1234 threads. Instead of over 12345 posts there were only 4000 plus. There were only 400 plus threads instead of about 1229 from last night.

Then it hit me, I wasn't logged in because of the power failure. When I logged in, everything went back to normal.

Does this mean that nearly two-thirds of all our threads are inappropriate for the casual viewer? If so, we really do need to get back to more serious survey issues. I'll admit that I'm one of the worst about using Beer Leg as a social gathering rather than a learning resource. In my defense, as a one crew business, it is great to be able to communicate with others experiencing similar daily struggles and pleasures.

yeah, Wendell, stop making us post P&R stuff, will ya!

"We" don't "need" to do anything. It is what it is.

also, when I switch to just one or another category, it makes no difference in the totals at the bottom, so I think something else is going on.. maybe your computer was looking at a cached file or something??

Much more than just P&R is invisible to the non-signed in viewer, Andy. I'm thinking that the rankings for Beer Leg would look really dismal if based only on the Survey-Related Only posts. This site will only begin to be more of a survey library and online self-study source if those of us who participate provide more survey-related discussion.

.. yes, I had not logged out, just changed the settings.

" I'm thinking that the rankings for Beer Leg would look really dismal if based only on the Survey-Related Only posts. "

... rankings? does that really matter, other than just an interesting point of discussion?

"This site will only begin to be more of a survey library and online self-study source if those of us who participate provide more survey-related discussion."

Well, I disagree. The idea that an online message board should be some sort of "survey library" is what tanked the P-Other-Board.

Let's not take ourselves too seriously. Life is serious enough these days. I think it's a good thing we have a place to joke and commiserate and cheer each other on.

The rankings to which I was referring are what make this site more attractive to advertisers who might pay to keep Beer Leg afloat.

Hey, I love the social atmosphere here. The other board is nearly dead.

I don't know anything about advertising, but it seems to me that if you have people looking at your website, it wouldn't really matter what they are chatting about. You have a broad spectrum of people that are, generally speaking, in a position to make or authorize purchases of expensive equipment and software.

If I was a vendor, I would be looking at the good will and loyalty of the group and not be too worried about the detail of the posts..

Listen, HC

:

I THINK WENDELL KNOWS WHAT HE IS DOING.
HE HAS STATED A FEW TIMES HOW HE IS POSITIONING THE PLACE TO ATTRACT THE SEARCH BOTS.

You always appear to be preoccupied with the statistics of the place.
You did this at the old place and now here.
Why don't we let this place become what it will become
But... if you want ot post surveying threads ..go for it. That is a great idea.
You had to be the one to have some supposed landmark # recently. I don't get it myself.
I never look at the statistics.
Right now, this is the BEST social site for LS without any frills, bells and whistles.
I would think that it will evolve into a very good resource site also.

There was talk about the survey reference encyclopedia being formed.
I think that this is a very good idea.
Maybe a new post should start about that topic. I do have few ideas.
But I think BeerLeg/Surveyor Connect will have to have a dedicated server to progress.

Regardless of what it might do to the rankings, I only have surveying-related categories available to non-logged-in visitors. Why?

  • We really only want to attract surveyors or those interested in surveying.
  • Google and other search bots are not registered users and thus, only index surveying-related threads.
  • Certainly rankings could help sell ads, but I don't want to sell ads based on false information; that is, I'd rather the potential advertisers knew that the overwhelming majority of our traffic was from surveyors and those related to our profession.

I may, at some point, see about getting the footer information to base itself on the overall site regardless of whether or not you are logged in.

I hope that clears things up a bit. 🙂

Social board, Volume of knowledge and Friendships. That is all part of any message board dedicated to like minded professionals.

That is all good but what I find to be the most important part of a board is the immediacy.

How many times have we seen someone in a severe bind, do to software, hardware or just home plumbing that comes on the board and gets a dozen or sometimes more answers to their problem all in the blink of an eye. How many times have you seen an answer that made you think, wow! that is a unique and cool way to skin that cat?

No long calls to tech support. I've seen this happen hundreds of times over the years since Mark started the first message board.

There is direct value (cost savings) in getting an answer in near real time to a problem.

There can be value in other formats and they may have other goals but the immediate answer has always been one of the strong points that attracted many to a survey board.

I enjoy a good joke or a good survey story but I always smile when someone gets the help they need and when they need it. That takes a lot of diverse posters to supply those answers.

Hi Wendell,

Andy said, “Let's not take ourselves too seriously. Life is serious enough these days. I think it's a good thing we have a place to joke and commiserate and cheer each other on.”

Deral said, “I enjoy a good joke or a good survey story but I always smile when someone gets the help they need and when they need it. That takes a lot of diverse posters to supply those answers.

Andy and Deral are spot on, IMO.

Wendell, keep up the great work. After all it’s your board and you, and Angel are great “board keepers”!

Have a great week.:-)

For the rest of y'all bitching about everything, simply don't read what you don't like.

Thanks, Wendell, for the clarification.

Just let us know how we can help out, when need be, and we will respond.
