Using tags in your posts is a great way to categorize your posts. Tags are basically just keywords to help others find what they are looking for when searching.
For example, let's say you want to buy a used Geodimeter instrument. In the right column, there's a collection of tags, called a "Tag Cloud", that have been used. If you see "Geodimeter" listed there, you'd just click on it and a list of posts with that tag specified will be displayed.
Yes, you could use the search function the same way. But one nice feature about using tags is the Tag Cloud I mentioned above. As more posts are tagged with the same keywords, the tags shown in the Cloud will change in boldness and size to reflect their popularity. It's a quick way to see what's discussed the most.
Using tags when posting are optional. I just thought I'd give a quick lesson on how they work, since they are a relatively new concept to many people.
