I've been alerted to a rumor running around elsewhere that BeerLeg.com is built using old software like a certain old version of another site used to be. I would like to take this opportunity to offer some clarification on the matter, since a few people have notified me since hearing the rumor.
BeerLeg.com is based on forum software that is well-established, has been around for several years, and continues to be developed today. It is written using modern technologies while still maintaining a traditional style and layout. The underlying code is anything but outdated. The fact is, the latest release of the software was released on July 10, 2010. In addition, I've added my own custom enhancements to it based on user input, which technically means that BeerLeg.com's customized version is current as of yesterday (the last time I implemented any changes to the code).
Just an FYI for those wondering and possibly hearing rumors through the grapevine. 🙂
Why beerleg.com actually works?
So, what you're saying is that there's a pretty darn good reason why beerleg.com actually works? Who would have thought it. :>
Why beerleg.com actually works?
Who gives a dam when it was written. If the software works, the site is maintained, and the users like it - darn little else matters!
Good job here - keep it up.

I think what he is saying is that it is not written in some obsolete code that only the dead doobie smoking writers understood and that there is no fear that an implemented change in one part of the code would cause unexpected and hard to repair problems in another part of the code causing such features as the search function to be down for a month as they scramble to find the last acid dropping code writer left alive who may be able to figure out what went wrong for an obscene amount of money.;-)
David is correct. I had not heard the rumor but really don't care about the underlying code. That is beyond my skills or knowledge. If a format works then that is all that matters.
That said, a Model T can get you from point A to B but I'm don't want to give up my heated seats on the T-Bird.
That doesn't mean though that I can't own both a sports car and a luxury car.

Ditto Dave!
This smells of SE Texas?
really, I was thinking far southwest Cali, myself.
Hmmm, I did not think of that.

I understand what you are saying. But there really is a VERY good reason for using up-to-date software for a website, especially one as popular as this one. As time goes on, security holes are exposed by hackers which may not have been security holes at a previous point in time. Browser updates, operating system updates and server software updates can all open up holes in other software running on the server, or there can just be a simple mistake in the software itself. The more time a specific software sits on a server with no updates, the more exposed it becomes until eventually it is a security nightmare.
If software is continually updated, then, of course, these issues are addressed when they are discovered. Therefore, it makes perfect sense to use an established software that has been around long enough to have the "experience" while still having an active developer and/or team to tackle problems as they occur.

Thanks! 🙂
