Question on what constitutes a view

Precisely what makes a tally as a view?

For example, there are times when I scroll by an older thread where several additional posts have been added. Assume there were 20 posts to that thread when I last visited it. Now there are seven more. However, I only look at the bottom one by clicking directly on it. A few seconds later I scroll by this thread once again. All posts appear to have viewed by me, but, there are six that I never actually saw.

So, when I clicked on "Beer Leg Forum" or "Back to the forum index", did that count as one new view (which is what really happened) or as one new view of all seven or do all 27 in the thread get counted as having been viewed again?

You can see that I have absolutely no idea how all this activity rating business works. Inquiring minds are always seeking answers to really, really weird questions.

A page view is counted every time you view a page. So if you sit there and refresh continuously, each of those will count. Hopefully, nobody is excessively doing anything like that.

While I'd need to look a little deeper, I believe that each post that currently exists in a thread when the thread is viewed would get a view count. However, that may not be true -- I suspect it's possible that it may depend on if the post in question is in view within the thread when the thread is viewed. That would make the most sense. However, if someone were to start at the top and scroll quickly to the bottom, each post would still get counted.

Here are the results of a test I just conducted using this thread:

Starting from the forum index, I clicked on “Question on what constitutes a view” posted by Holy Cow

Original post had 101 views, Wendell’s reply had 11.

Clicked “Back to the forum index“

Clicked on “Question on what constitutes a view” posted by Wendell.

Original post had 102 views, Wendell’s reply had 12

Clicked “Back to the forum index”

Clicked on the little “Show preview” box next to Wendell’s reply

Clicked on Holy Cow’s original post

Original post had 102 views, Wendell’s reply had 13

So, apparently, clicking on a reply to an original post adds a view to every post in the thread even though it takes you directly to the reply you clicked on (presumably because it opens the whole thread), but clicking on the little preview icon only adds a view to the specific reply.
