So I'm thinking about ditching them. Maybe it will help performance just a tad if the system doesn't have to look for them at all.

The tags in the right column all seem to be tags that I used...

When you create a new post, there is a tags field right under the subject line. These create the "tag cloud" in the right column. Tags are basically keywords that relate to the subject matter of the posts you create and/or reply to.

I never even look at those.

I guess I thought those were automatically generated by the posts themselves.

Those are "emoticons" and/or "smilies". Tags are keywords associated with a post's content. 🙂

I did use tags in one post. It is easy to forget to add the tags.🙂 :star:              :beer:

Well it's definitely not required and you can find the same info via search anyway.

I got a fishing tag and a hunting tag and tags on my vehicles and sometimes my helpers seem like tag-alongs when they don't have a clue on showing them a new procedure....

For what it's worth, I've tried to add tags to posts, but haven't ever seen any of them appear in the box to the right. One problem with the tags (aside from posters not using them, of course) is that many meaningful terms are phrases rather than individual words.

Good point.

I certainly don't want to shove anything down anyone's throat. I just figure if nobody is really using them, they might as well not be cluttering up the site. 🙂

I'm not using them... And if it will make this bad boy run even faster... ditch 'em!! Especially if they are redundant to the search function.

And I'm with Mike Evans... without being tooooo emotional....
I  this site!! 🙂

Guess who?

Testing tags from a non-admin account. 🙂

I see, said the blind man. Non-admins can type in the tags but they are not saved...

😀

That was my "handle" back in the old BBS days of 300 baud modems and green screen monitors... In fact, I was 5150 when my wife first "met" me online.

I think of "5150" from Van Halen. We all thought it was a reference to an insane person. Well... it kinda is.

Yeah, it's a police code for "a danger to self and others". That was why I picked it. Later on, when Van Halen released the 5150 album, everyone that didn't already know me assumed my handle was based on that.
