When you create a new post, there is a tags field right under the subject line. These create the "tag cloud" in the right column. Tags are basically keywords that relate to the subject matter of the posts you create and/or reply to.

I guess I thought those were automatically generated by the posts themselves.

Those are "emoticons" and/or "smilies". Tags are keywords associated with a post's content. 🙂

I did use tags in one post. Well it's definitely not required and you can find the same info via search anyway.

I got a fishing tag and a hunting tag and tags on my vehicles and sometimes my helpers seem like tag-alongs when they don't have a clue on showing them a new procedure....

For what it's worth, I've tried to add tags to posts, but haven't ever seen any of them appear in the box to the right. One problem with the tags (aside from posters not using them, of course) is that many meaningful terms are phrases rather than individual words.
