On a little job, in a small town near me.

I'd driven around, looking for an ideal base site. Picked one, in the right of way, near a rich man's house.

I knocked on his door. No answer. Went back, and knocked again. No answer.

It was hot, and I was wasting time. So, I set up. I'd gotten a couple shots, and he came home. Cussing. Screaming. I "yes sir'd" him. Agreed to move on. He demanded to know "where'd I get permission ". "Nobody. Just an ideal base site.". And it was hot. Time was wasting. He offered me water. No thanks. We bring that.

I picked it all up. Drove 1/4 mile down the road. Knocked on a door. Got full permission from a farmer. Turned out to be a fine fellow. We visited for an hr. I got a lot of work done from the second base site.

I wound up with a friend.

Getting moved can be better than staying.

Yes sir is often better than fussing. Comes out better in the long run.

Nate

No point in arguing, that never gets you anywhere.  I had a similar situation here in NJ one summer where we set a drill hole on the top of curb of a public road to set the base up and put a small paint dot on it to come back to the day after the static observation.

The homeowner came home, pulled into his driveway and was in a rage, saying we defaced his property with the paint dot.  I explained, politely, that we were not on his property.  He got the number off of our truck and called the owner of the company and went ballistic on him.  The next thing was the ring, ring from the owner telling me to abandon the set up and scrape up the paint mark.  Almost a half day wasted with not enough data for an OPUS solution.

First, was he from North of Richmond?

Second, you are a saint. I wouldn't move from the ROW for anything.

In the public right-of-way? "Feel free to call the police, mister. Here's our card. My boss will tell you the same thing."

My chain has been yanked before.

Please be sure the "chain" (Tape) is flat on the pavement, if a truck comes by.....

Time visiting in the shade, is not the same as in the hot sun....

Set up one time on the front lawn of a hospital where it appeared the lawn had been mowed the day before.  Within 15 minutes a maintenance worker appeared on a lawn mower and began mowing in the part of the lawn where we had set up.  We got the hint and moved on.

Just been by limited experience 'hot' don't bring out the best in anybody. I do this thing, whether it started out intentional or not, it's become somewhat intentional, when somebody gets all hot under the collar with me, I stutter a bit and speak super softly so they have to lean in to hear what I'm saying. Something about the stutter that just makes people calm down and be a bit more sympathetic. They're expecting me to push back and I jujitsu their butts and usually in a couple minutes we be chatting like friends. Not always, some folks just got brooms stuck up their you what and best to just move along and leave them to their misery rather than share in it. Tha-tha-tha-that's all folks!

I got chased out of the ROW one time while looking at a bench mark. It had been outside a rural field fence when set, but by then someone had built a house and had manicured lawn all the way out across the shallow ditch to the gravel. I didn't have to dig as it was just at the surface.

Took a picture, and it was late enough in the afternoon that in the shade of the trees my flash went off. That probably was what got the owner's attention, and added to his temperature.

The guy came stomping out with a very red face and demanded I get off his property. I just said okay and left without getting the measurement I wanted from a culvert to the disk.

@bill93 : I would have asked him to hold the zero end of the tape on the bench mark so I could measure over to this culvert that I'm going to report to the feds.

Survey tech buddy of mine was nearing 80 when a newcomer to his little hometown came walking out of his house, not saying a word, and shoved my buddy onto his rear.  He was searching for pins across the alley from the newcomer's place, which had been the home of one of my buddy's brothers a few years earlier.  Crazy people are everywhere.

It sure seems like it's getting worse.
