Actually Warren, I think since FrancisH is now "banned" that "Sean Ora" is a sock puppet created last November for this eventuality. 🙂

So still waiting for a reliable source that says his method was wrong?
I guess those that commented negatively regarding his method really have no proof to back up their claim?

I've used the Ignore button twice now, though I'm not sure it wasn't on one person with two accounts.

Or maybe you just want to forget about commenting on something that you have no knowledge on and are afraid to back up your claim?

Let me say this one more time, only a bit slower so you can follow along. Your method is an old stop-gap measure that makes the erroneous assumption that the geoid separation is a constant across a project. If you had taken any time in the last 20 years to educate yourself, you would have stopped using that archaic method.

https://www.fig.net/resources/publications/figpub/pub62/Figpub62.pdf

The technical paper was published 2014. So this method being used by an international organization is 'old'?

Can you provide a link post 2014 that says this method by FIG is no longer applicable and is erroneous?
It would help a lot of international surveyors to follow the expertise of the american surveyors.

Sean Ora, post: 420946, member: 12254 wrote: where is your source for claiming his method was wrong

Point of fact. I did not say his method was wrong. In fact, I mildly defended it. What I said was that claiming that GeeOddMike was "confused" about anything to do with geodesy - especially something so basic as the relationship between geoid heights and ellipsoid heights - was comical. Which seems to have set him off. Too bad. How sad.

US surveyors have a good geoid model available to them, for free, which we all use. We always have the option of creating our own custom geoid model for any site. In essence, that is what you do when you (can I drop the subterfuge, "Sean"?) tie a benchmark and apply an offset to your ellipsoid heights. It would be much better to tie benchmarks that surround your survey area and apply a model to your ellipsoid heights which take into account the undulations of the geoid. Which are always present. Using the geoid model is easy. It's free. It's the right thing to do. Checking into a benchmark is prudent practice. Sticking you head in the sand and refusing to use a geoid model is just silly. Claiming that the rest of the world is doing it wrong because they won't do it your way is childish.

But is it wrong? That's what you were saying about his method of using a constant shift from ellipsoid to chart datum/MSL/MLLW.

You have the gall to ask for respect yet you dish out disrespectful comments on a fellow surveyor on something he said that was correct all along.

[SARCASM]I think it's time for us American surveyors to admit that this whole GPS thing has been a fraud. The emperor has no clothes. All this make-work for federal geodesists and university professors was just a scam to enrich Charlie Trimble. Industry insiders know it's true. You guys talk about $75,000 to outfit a crew, when I was able to outfit a two man crew for hundreds.
Brunton pocket transit with real leather case: $400 (this is for the good one)
Lufkin Super Hi-Way $273 (don't need no stinkin' reel)
Sokkia 5x hand level $100 (good Japanese optics, not a cheapo)
Keeson pocket rod $15

I'm well under $900 bucks here, and ready to rock. I do Mortgage Surveys and Elevation Certificates all day long for $175 a piece, and can set 1st order benches whenever I feel like it.

Sean,

You seem to be in a different time zone, and it doesn't appear to be Greenwich.
