The firmware download for the 4400 available from Trimble supports both the 4400 and 7400.

From the readme:

Version 2.38 Firmware for the Series 7400 and 4400 receivers was released
on 8 June, 1998.?ÿ

@keelan Thank you, I didn't realise that the 4400 and the 7400 were packaged together, is this common knowledge and its just something I wasn't aware of??ÿ I have been searching for information on the 7400 but there doesn't seem to be much around, is there anything else I should know? Thanks again you have been really helpful

It may have been common knowledge at one point, but this stuff is close to 30 years old!

Trimble has done a reasonable job of keeping around old firmware, but their organization is a bit chaotic. I only learned about the 4400/7400 situation when I downloaded the I updater and read the readme. Otherwise, it seems the 7400 didnƒ??t exist.

Trimble was in the habit of making different products out of the exact same piece of hardware: the 4000 SSi was sold as Site Surveyor, Geodetic Surveyor, Geodetic System Surveyor, and Reference ?ÿStation versions. Trimbleƒ??s docs make it seem like each one was in someway running specialized hardware, but in reality they were all the same thing with different options turned on or installed.

The 7400 seems to just be the 4400 platform with a 2 serial port card installed, and all the features turned on, whereas the 4400 was sold as a rover only. I imagine they gave it a different part number to create some psychological distance between the two products, in order to justify charging a whole lot more for the 7400, even though it was just a 4400 with a 2 port serial card slapped in.?ÿ

@keelan thanks for the information about 4400/7400.

Also like the overview of old Trimble GPS you created, Thanks.

@mike1202 I'm impressed you spotted that page, I realized only a couple days ago that the page was an orphan and gave it a proper link.?ÿWhen I first got interested in the old Trimble gear, I struggled with understanding the timeline of their gear, and often the product name wasn't printed anywhere on the product, just the 12345-00 part number. For someone that was in elementary school when the plastic box 4000 series came out, it's hard to know that the SSi is a more modern version of the SSe, and that the Si and Se are both single frequency receivers.

@electech I found my hard-copy 4400 manual, and compared it to the online manual for the 7400. The only actual difference between the two is that the 7400 was shipped with 4 serial ports, and the 1PPS output/Event marker input. The 4400 has a blanking panel where the AUX port should be.
